Information On Michelham Priory

Parts of the building date back to the 13th century, when it was initially used as a spiritual retreat, and home for Augustinian monks. Following the dissolution of the monasteries in the 1500’s it was partially demonised and ‘new’ Tudor extensions were added, thus remodelling the building. Although the Dining room and ‘Prior’s room’ remain virtually as they were prior to the Tudor period times, much of the rest was remodelled in the late 16th century. The Priory was purchased 1601 by Thomas Sackville and thus remained the Sackville ancestral home for more than 300 years.
